Behind her a dark horse breaks into a gallop along the rail. Bare trees stand in the falling snow, and the light is so flat that everything except the two dark shapes dissolves into grey. It is an ordinary working moment — a horse being exercised on a winter morning — held with the compositional care of a painting.

The photograph is generally published as the work of Félix Thiollier (1842–1914) and dated 1899. Thiollier was a Saint-Étienne industrialist who left business early for art and archaeology, taught himself photography, and spent more than twenty years photographing the Forez — its monuments, its ruins, its people and above all its weather — leaving some three to four thousand negatives. He composed like a painter: deliberate framing, subdued light, deep texture. His descendants gave the surviving archive to the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole in 2024.

The attribution is traditional rather than documented, and this edition says so. Asked about this photograph in March 2025, the museum's Collections service replied that it could not confirm the attribution from its records. The title and the year travel with the picture wherever it is reproduced; neither has a museum source behind it. What is not in question is the period — dress, plate and handling place the picture firmly around 1900 — nor the copyright status: a photograph of that age is in the public domain whoever made it.

Fine Porcelain — 10 oz.
