Henri Matisse

In 1941, after surgery for abdominal cancer, Henri Matisse could no longer stand at an easel for long. He picked up scissors and paper instead. What followed — Jazz, the Chapel of the Rosary, the monumental cut-outs — is widely considered his greatest work. These mugs are drawn from that final period: the most liberated, most colour-saturated painting of a career that had always been working toward exactly this.
