About Tazzarte
Every object in this collection was chosen because it stops you.
Not because it matches your kitchen. Not because it makes a nice gift. Because something in its history, its image, or its unexpected connection to the present deserved a second look — and a place in your morning ritual.
Tazzarte brings art history into daily life, one carefully chosen object at a time. The collection spans five centuries of human creativity: from Matisse's cut-outs of 1947 to a Victorian botanical photograph, from Albrecht Dürer's rhinoceros of 1515 to Thomas Mann in Küsnacht. What connects them is not a style or an era. It is the quality of attention behind the selection.

The Collector: Dr. Walther Fuchs

Dr. Walther Fuchs is a historian, publisher, and scholar based in Küsnacht, Switzerland. He holds a doctorate from the University of Zurich in the history of science, and has spent three decades researching the intersections of art, medicine, architecture, and cultural history.
He co-founded the journal Zwitscher-Maschine: Journal on Paul Klee and has published extensively on Klee, Chagall, Richard Neutra, and the history of anatomical wax models in Enlightenment Europe. His books — on the Chagall windows of Zurich, the literary history of Küsnacht, and the ecology of Lake Zurich — are published by Digiboo Verlag, which he founded in 2009.
Tazzarte is his other project. The same instinct that drives his scholarship — the search for the object that reveals an unexpected connection — drives the selection of every mug in this collection.
Most mugs are printed by algorithm. These are not.
"A mug is a small thing. But the right image on the right object, held in your hand every morning, has a way of making history tangible. That is what I am looking for." — Dr. Walther Fuchs
What Makes a Tazzarte Object
Not every image deserves a mug. Not every famous artwork belongs in this collection. Every object selected for Tazzarte meets five criteria.
- Historical depth. The image must carry a story worth telling — historically situated, with a known date, place, and context. Every Tazzarte object has a provenance.
- Visual power at small scale. A mug is not a museum wall. The image must work at 9 centimetres. Compositions that dissolve into noise at small scale are excluded, regardless of their fame.
- An unexpected connection. The strongest selections reveal something the buyer did not anticipate: a link between a 1502 woodcut and a contemporary question, between a Swiss lake and a New York photographer, between a medical illustration and a work of art. If the connection is obvious, the object is probably not right for Tazzarte.
- Public domain integrity. Every artwork in the core collection is either fully in the public domain or produced under explicit licence. We do not reproduce protected works without authorisation. We do not privatise the art. We curate the filter.
- The morning test. Would this object improve a morning? Not impress — improve. There is a difference. Tazzarte is not about status. It is about the quality of attention a well-chosen object can bring to an ordinary day.
