About the Artwork:

Henri Matisse's "Composition (Les velours)" or "The Velvets" from 1947 showcases his technique of "gouaches découpées," where he painted paper, cut forms out of it, and arranged them into compositions. This work reflects Matisse's exploration of organic forms, reminiscent of algae or antler shapes, possibly inspired by his memories of the lagoons and coral reefs of French Polynesia. The title "Les velours" might allude to the velvety texture of young antlers.

Matisse's method involved pinning these cutouts to walls, adjusting them until he found the perfect arrangement, which is evident from the small pinholes left in the paper. This technique allowed him to play with space, color, and form in a way that traditional painting could not, offering a new dimension to his art where the composition's elements could interact with the space around them, much like his earlier explorations but in a more abstract, less figurative manner.

This mug celebrates Matisse's late innovative phase, where he turned limitations due to health into new artistic possibilities, demonstrating his continuous evolution as an artist even in his later years.
