Heidi Hugging a Goat · Peter the Goatherd · Heidi and Grandfather, 1922
Three chapter vignettes, line drawings with one colour tint, printed in Johanna Spyri, Heidi (Philadelphia: David McKay, 1922)
The New York Public Library, image IDs 1699013, 1699009, 1699024
Three people carry the story of Heidi: the girl who is sent up the mountain, Peter, the goatherd who takes her out to the pasture every morning, and her grandfather, the gruff old man the village calls the Alm-Uncle (in the original German, the Alm-Öhi). This set brings the three together, each in one of the small chapter vignettes Jessie Willcox Smith drew for the 1922 American edition published by David McKay in Philadelphia.
Johanna Spyri, the author of Heidi, was born on 12 June 1827. Her two-hundredth birthday in 2027 is the occasion for this anniversary edition. The vignettes have been digitally restored from the printed book: the halftone dot screen is gone, the pen lines are rebuilt and the tint laid in as clean, flat colour.
Three fine porcelain mugs, 10 oz each — 104 mm high, 75 mm across the base. Dishwasher and microwave safe.
In this set: Heidi Hugging a Goat, 1922 · Peter the Goatherd, 1922 · Heidi and Grandfather, 1922 · the whole Heidi Anniversary Edition
