In 1911, Melli Beese (1886–1925) became the first woman in Germany to earn a pilot’s license. Trained as an architect and sculptor, she turned to the sky—despite sabotage, injury, and institutional exclusion. This sepia-toned artwork portrays her seated in an early monoplane, calm and composed, while the Rumpler Taube—her aircraft of choice—soars above. The image speaks not only of flight, but of autonomy, resistance, and design at the margins of history.
Transferred onto the surface of a white ceramic mug, the motif retains its graphic clarity and tonal restraint. The lines are crisp, the historical palette exact. Whether in porcelain or standard ceramic, the print wraps harmoniously from handle to handle, offering a moment of pause with every sip. Dishwasher-safe and locally printed via Gelato, this piece balances visual intensity with everyday use.
For scholars of aviation, for collectors of feminist heritage, for lovers of design that still resists simplification—this mug invites reflection. Tazzarte honours Melli Beese not through monumentality, but through gesture: a flight remembered in ceramic form, close to hand.
