The work on this mug
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935)
Heidi and Grandfather, 1922
Chapter vignette, line drawing with one colour tint, from Johanna Spyri, Heidi (Philadelphia: David McKay)
The New York Public Library, image ID 1699024
Public domain.

Heidi's white-bearded grandfather in his yellow hood, with Heidi leaning against him as they look into a book together. One of the small chapter pictures Jessie Willcox Smith drew for Johanna Spyri’s Heidi, the story of a girl and her grandfather high in the Swiss Alps. In the village he is known as the Alm-Uncle; Spyri's German original calls him the Alm-Öhi.

Johanna Spyri was born on 12 June 1827. Her two-hundredth birthday in 2027 is the occasion for this anniversary edition, with each chapter picture on a mug of its own.

Fine porcelain, 10 oz — 104 mm high, 75 mm across the base. The image runs around the body; handle and rim stay white. Dishwasher and microwave safe.

From the same series: Heidi Reading · Heidi Waving · Heidi Hugging a Goat · Two Goats with Pink Bows · Peter the Goatherd · Heidi and Her Friend · Heidi Picking Flowers · Heidi with Little Goats · Heidi with Two Kittens · Heidi at the Table · The Book Cover
