The work on this mug
Jessie Willcox Smith (1863–1935)
Peter the Goatherd, 1922
Chapter vignette, line drawing with one colour tint, from Johanna Spyri, Heidi (Philadelphia: David McKay)
The New York Public Library, image ID 1699009
Public domain.

Peter the goatherd, Heidi's friend on the mountain, in his green smock and hat on a grassy bank, a white goat standing close beside him. One of the small chapter pictures Jessie Willcox Smith drew for Johanna Spyri’s Heidi, the story of a girl and her grandfather high in the Swiss Alps. In Spyri's German original he is the Geissenpeter, Goat Peter.

Johanna Spyri was born on 12 June 1827. Her two-hundredth birthday in 2027 is the occasion for this anniversary edition, with each chapter picture on a mug of its own.

Fine porcelain, 10 oz — 104 mm high, 75 mm across the base. The image runs around the body; handle and rim stay white. Dishwasher and microwave safe.
